The World Expo in Shanghai

WOOOHOO!! Wooooo....woooooohooo....woo?

Yeah, it was okay.  Getting to see almost every country in the world construct a building to brag about how awesome they are in a couple of square miles is a fairly awe inspiring sight.  But the expo falls short when you realize that nothing can really be that exciting inside the pavilions.  Almost all of the pavilions had absolutely breathtaking design go into them, but I don't care how interesting a country happens to be, it can't fit inside of a building.

My bitterness might be particularly due to the three hour wait that we endured to enter the South Korean pavilion.  The outside looked incredible.  The line was long, so we assumed it had to be for good reason.

As the hours ticked by, I started to realize something.  Nothing was going to be awesome inside that building.  At best, there would be a few interactive exhibits about Korea's growth and creativity.  And after waiting for about 2 hours, we got into the pavilion.  And all we found was another line with televisions along the way that informed you of how long you would have to wait.  It was here that I came to the conclusion that the only thing that would be worth waiting was Starcraft themed laser tag.  Not only was there no laser tag, but not a single mention of Starcraft!

Once we got over that pain, we spent the rest of the time walking around the expo.  And that was actually pretty cool.  I hope to eventually post a little video compilation of various pavilions, but for now, check out the China pavilion.  It was...looming.  Awe-inspiring.  And a little terrifying.

The China pavilion actually required another ticket purchase...so we just looked from the outside.

My next post will be about Shanghai!

  1. What was the pavilion for Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) like?

  2. Yeah, I always imagined the pavilions themselves would be much more interesting than anything else. You think they'd have a replica Battle Cruiser inside or a Tasteless/Artosis robot but NOOOOOOOO...
